Colons from the eastern seaboard started to flock into the islands after the United States declared their independence in 1776. They literally moved their estates to the closest territories still under British rule. Nassau is the only major hub, but islands such as Exuma, Eleuthera, Cat Islands and Long Island provide a full immersion into their breathtaking waters that have no real match. Day trips can also be organized from Nassau to get a feel of their uncontaminated nature.

Saint Louis, in the state of Missouri, was the point of departure of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that navigated upstream the Missouri river all the way to the Pacific Northwest. Today Saint Louis is a quiet midwestern city, but back then it was a major trading post that grew in a rather sophisticated way as it represented the connection to the more developed cities of the east, on top of being on the Mississippi river running from the great northern plains to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico.
